It was reported that the bulk of current research is focused on development of semiconductor (GaN or AlGaN) built LEDs that work in the ultraviolet where the wavelength of light is 250 nm. In May 2006 it was reported that an inefficient diode could emit light at a wavelength of 210 nm. A single aluminum nitride crystal is characterized by an energy difference of 6.2eV as measured by ultraviolet vacuum reflectance. Theoretically the gap allows certain wavelengths in the vicinity of 200 nanometers to be able to pass through. However, when using it commercially, there are many challenges that need to be solved. Aluminum nitride can be found in optoelectronic engineering, including the inductive layer in optical storage interfaces and electronic semiconductors as chip carriers with excellent thermal conductivity and military applications.

An epitaxial stretching technique for AlN crystals is also used in the surface acoustic wave detectors due to the properties characteristic of the AlN piezoelectric force. The detectors are put in the silicon wafer. Only very few places can consistently produce these thin films.

Ceramics made of aluminum nitride exhibit high strength at room temperatures and high temperatures, a tiny expansion coefficient, and a high thermal conductivity. They can be utilized as heat exchanger materials for structures with high temperatures.
